Nelson Lichtenstein has been named the new editor of Ohio History. He

received his B.A. from Dartmouth and his Ph.D. from the University of

California, Berkeley. He has published articles in Labor History, Radical

America, New Politics, and the Dictionary of American Biography. Editor of

the recently published The Kennedy Years and The Johnson Years, two

volumes in the Facts on File "Political Profile" series, Dr. Lichtenstein

served as lecturer in history at The Ohio State University last year. The

former editor, Dr. Thomas H. Hartig, has become the Curator of the History

Department of the Ohio Historical Society.

 

The Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Commission's final

two conference series papers are now available. The fifth of this series,

Toward an Urban Ohio, which was edited by John Wunder, contains articles

by Charles N. Glaab, Harry N. Scheiber, Melvyn Dubofsky, Zane L. Miller,

and James F. Richardson. The last of the series, Quality of Life: Ohio in

Century Three, contains articles by Robert Teater, Thomas Hailstones, Roger

Fortin, H. Bradley Hammond, Zane L. Miller, Sheila Miller, George Shields,

and Robert G. Wolverton. Each of these publications is available from the

Sales Department of the Ohio Historical Society, I-71 and 17th Avenue,

Columbus, Ohio 43211 for $2.00.

 

The Ohio Academy of History holds its fall meeting October 7-8, 1977, at

Muskingum College. The meeting is a social gathering and includes a

reception and dinner Friday evening and a tour on Saturday. The annual

spring meeting will be held April 28-29, 1978, at the Fawcett Center for

Tomorrow on The Ohio State University campus. Proposals for papers and

panels should be sent to Professor Phillip N. Bebb, Department of History,

Ohio University, Athens, Ohio 45701. The Newberry Library sponsors the

second national conference on College Teaching of State and Local History

January 12-15, 1978. Applications for registration are due October 15, 1977.

Recent promotions, appointments, retirements, and deaths within the

professional community of Ohio historians include the following. At The Ohio

State University, Leila J. Rupp and Williamson Murray have been appointed

assistant professor; Kenneth J. Andrien was appointed visiting professor;

Joseph H. Lynch, James R. Bartholomew, and A. Harding Ganz (Newark

campus) were promoted to associate professor; and Gary W. Reichard has

been promoted to associate professor and Department Chairman. At Ohio

Wesleyan University, John Morrison is ending his one-year appointment as

visiting professor and Robert Shimp, who will be returning after a year at the

Newberry Library, will be Acting Chairman for the fall 1977 term. Xavier

University has added the Reverend John LaRocca, S.J., to its faculty as

professor and August M. Seher has retired. Wilmington College has promoted

Mary L. Wagener to assistant professor. Henry B. Leonard, Jerome

Friedman, Donald W. Wade, and S. Victor Papacosma have been promoted

to associate professor at Kent State University. Bowling Green State

University has promoted Edmund Danziger, Lawrence Friedman, and David

Skaggs to full professor; Fuji Kawashima and Kenneth Kiple to associate

professor; and Kay Hamod to the history faculty of the Firelands Campus.

David C. Gordon is a new History Department member and Chairman at

Wright State University. At Lake Erie College, Kim McQuaid has been

appointed assistant professor.

William J. Ulrich has been reappointed for another four-year term as

Chairman of the History Department of John Carroll University and Marian

J. Morton has been promoted to associate professor. At the University of

Cincinnati, Thomas Sakmyster has been promoted to associate professor.

David D. Van Tassel has been named Chairman of the History Department at

Case Western Reserve University, Michael Altschul has been promoted to

professor, and Marion C. Siney was appointed to the position of Haram C.

Haydn Professor of History. The American Jewish Archives has appointed

Abraham J. Peck to Assistant Director and Assistant Editor of its journal,

American Jewish Archives. Hilmar G. Grimm retired in June 1977 after forty

years of service to Capital University's History Department. At Ohio

University, John L. Gaddis is returning from a two-year leave of absence at

the Naval War College; Donald S. Spencer, visiting assistant professor, has

returned to the University of Montana; and Bruce E. Steiner returns to

full-time teaching and research after five years as Associate Dean of Arts and

Sciences. John Oglevee, of Bowling Green State University, and George

Ruppel, of the University of Dayton, died last spring.

Professor William D. Hoover, of the University of Toledo, was on

sabbatical in Japan during spring quarter of 1977 and has been awarded a

Fulbright-Hays Research Grant which will enable him to remain there for the

1977-1978 academic year. Two University of Cincinnati professors have

received grants: Henry D. Shapiro has a Fulbright to Germany for 1977-1978

and will teach at the Free University of Berlin and Walter Williams received a

grant from the American Council of Learned Societies. Michael Les

Benedict, of The Ohio State University, has been awarded a Guggenheim

Memorial Fellowship.

 

Harpers Ferry Armory and the New Technology, written by M. Roe Smith

of The Ohio State University, was awarded the 1977 Frederick Jackson

Turner Award of the Organization of American Historians. Irvine Anderson

of Raymond Walters College won the Newcomen Award for the best book in

American economic and diplomatic history for his book The

Standard-Vacuum Oil Company and United States East Asian Policy

1933-1941 (Princeton Univeristy Press, 1975).

 

The Cincinnati Historical Society, Hebrew Union College, the Public

Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, the University of Cincinnati, and

Xavier University are jointly sponsoring an oral history project on Cincinnati

area history. Three series of interviews will begin this fall, dealing with

political life, cultural institutions, and religious and educational leaders. Mary

K. Howard, Marian J. Morton, Lois Scharf, and other women historians of

the greater Cleveland area are working on a project dealing with the history of

women in the Western Reserve region. This project is being developed in

conjunction with the Western Reserve Historical Society. The American

Jewish Archives has received a grant from the National Endowment for the

Humanities for the reprocessing of forty-eight major collections.

 

A sixth annual cumulation of Ohio Documents, edited by Clyde Hordusky,

has been issued by the State Library. It supersedes all issues of Ohio

Documents published in 1976. A five-year cumulation which will contain all

entries from 1971 to 1975 is in preparation. At present, annual cumulations

from 1971 to 1976 serve as a supplement to the Union Bibliography of Ohio

Printed State Documents, 1803-1970, edited by Patricia Swanson.

 

Microfilm editions of the Clement L. Vallandigham Papers (1 reel) are

available from the Publications Department of the Western Reserve Historical

Society Library at $12.00 per reel plus fifty cents for postage and handling.
