Don R. Gerlach was recently named The
University of Akron's 1987-1988
Outstanding Researcher, a prestigious
award which carries a $1,000 cash prize
and is given annually according to a
vote of the Alumni Council following
nominations by University of Akron
colleagues. Gerlach is well-known for his
research on Philip Schuyler and has
published the first of a three-volume study
entitled Proud Patriot: Philip
Schyler and the American Revolution in New
York, 1733-77. He has taught at Akron since 1962.
Nicholas J. Zentos, Associate Professor
of History at Lorain County
Community College, and his wife, Wendy
Marley Zentos, have compiled
Ethnic Communities of Lorain County:
History and Directory, a 96-page
listing
of Lorain County's ethnic churches,
fraternal clubs, social groups, and cultural
organizations. Brief group histories are
accompanied by photographs, maps,
and census data. Those interested in

The New York State Historical
Association recently announced the 1988
winners of their annual Kerr History
Prize and Manuscript Award. The Kerr
History Prize-which is awarded each year
to the best article published in the
Association's New York History-has been
awarded to Randy William Widdis
of the University of Regina,
