The Legislative History Editorial Board of the Capitol Square Foundation seeks an academically trained historian to write a single volume comprehensive history of the Ohio General Assembly from 1803-present. The expectation is that this work will be suitable for publication by a university press, with the final manuscript completed by March 1, 2007. The author will be paid $75,000 over the life of the project dependent upon satisfactory progress. Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, and a 1,000-word prospectus explaining how they would approach such a project. Members of the Legislative History Editorial Board of the Capitol Square Foundation are: Dr. Herbert Asher, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, The Ohio State University; Dr. Andrew Cayton, Distinguished Professor of History, Miami University; Dr. Alonzo Hamby, Distinguished Professor of History, Ohio University; Dr. David Stebenne, Associate Professor of History, The Ohio State University; and Dr. Barbara Terzian, Assistant Professor of History, Ohio Wesleyan University.


The Ohio and the World Lecture Series is underway. Sponsored by The Ohio State University, the Ohio Bicentennial Commission, and the Ohio Humanities Council, this eight-lecture series began in March and will finish in June. The lead organizers for the lecture series are Richard Sisson, Board of Trustees Professor in Comparative Politics, and Geoffrey Parker, Andreas Dorpalen Professor of History, both of The Ohio State University. The lecturers are distinguished researchers in their fields. The remaining lectures include: “Ohio: The Heartland of Progressive Reform,” by Kathryn Kish Sklar (May 7 and 8); “Beyond Main Street: The Passing of Agrarian Society, War, and Civil Rights,” by James T. Patterson (May 14 and 15); “A Changing Society: The New World Economy, Energy, Globalization, and the Environment,” by Herbert B. Asher (May 21 and 22); and “A Retrospective on Ohio’s Quality of Life: A Consideration of ‘Roads Taken and Roads Not Taken’ for the 21st Century,” by William E. Kirwan (June 12). The Mormon History Association (MHA) announces its theme, “Varieties of Mormon Experience in a Pluralistic World,” for its Spring 2003 Conference. The conference will be held in the Kirtland, Ohio, area on May 22-25, 2003. Scholars will share their research explorations on the unity and diversity that characterized the Mormon movement from its early days in the 1830s to the present, as well as the complex ways in which Mormonism has interacted with other religious groups in the larger world.
