5b.1 Hopewell Earthworks In Ohio

These maps show the Hopewell earthworks in the valleys of the Scioto River and Paint Creek in Ross County and the Great Miami River in Butler and Hamilton Counties. These areas are also shown on the map of Ohio on the opposite wall. Why these sites were grouped in this manner is the subject of much current research. This map or "plate" is one of many from Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley (1848) by Ephraim Squier and Edwin Davis that describe Hopewell works as they existed during the first half of the 19th century. , Image Number: SquierDavisPlateIII
