2.17 Spear Point Styles (video)
Description
Paleoindians made spear points and knives in several styles. These styles are known as fluted, lanceolate, and stemmed. The fluted points are distinguished by the flutes or grooves on both faces of the tool. The flutes made the points more stable when attached to spear shafts. The sharp edges of the base and the sides were ground down to prevent the bindings from being cut. Fluted points were bound to bone or wooden shafts with animal tendons. They may also have been glued in place with pitch, a tar-like substance. Image number: FOCase18c
