Appendix A:
Issue Dates and Pagination
When
working on the index, it quickly became clear to the compiler that the exact
pagination and date of issue had to be established in order to complete the
project. This appendix is included so
that researchers will have an authoritative list of titles, pagination, and
issue dates for future footnotes and other reference citations.
As
mentioned in the Preface, there has been some confusion regarding the journal’s
early editions as the Ohio Archaeological
and Historical Quarterly. During
this time, the journal underwent an incubation process that did not settle into
a regular publication and binding schedule until the editorship of Emilius O.
Randall. The practice of binding
volumes only upon completion of a certain number of pages, and the re-issue of
bound sets by the state legislature further adds to the confusion surrounding
the issuance of these early volumes.
Understanding the fact that the early editors also held jobs as the
curators, secretaries, and librarians of an infant state historical society
helps one to understand why it took a decade to establish the routine
production of this journal. This
listing was established using editor and library copies of the journal as well
as the Ohio Historical Society archives.
One
final note. Despite the sometimes
confusing titles found on bound volumes of the journal, the four titles here
listed are the only official titles of the society’s scholarly journal.

[1]. Although later notes say that Volume 1 was
published in 1885 and 1886, it was first issued with the June 1887 issue. To add to the confusion, this issue contained
papers and proceedings from the 1885 society meetings. These early volumes were issued in a
quarterly pamphlet form, and would not receive a volume number until about
300-500 pages had accumulated. When
there were enough pages, they were given a volume number and issued in bound
form, and free copies were sent to the state legislators and members of the
society.
[3]. Volumes 1 and
2 were issued quarterly in pamphlet form and then later bound into book form
and issued to legislators and some members.
Volume 3, however, was issued in 1891 as a single bound volume. An editorial note in Volume 3 states that
“many members expressing a preference for the publication in bound (annual)
form, this volume is so issued. Should
this form seem best, it will be continued.”
[4]. There is an
interesting history to the confusion surrounding the preparation and
publication dates for Volumes 4 and 5.
Albert A. Graham, the first editor of the journal, began to fail in
health in 1890—suffering from a severe form of pulmonary asthma—and completely
collapsed in July 1893 during the preparations for the World’s Columbian
Exposition. Upon the recommendation of
his doctors, he took a leave of absence and moved to Albuquerque. Notes in Volumes 4 and 5 lead the reader to
believe that the gap in publication was due to “lack of funds and the
engrossment of the Society in other directions,” while a look at the extensive
correspondence surrounding these years reveals a tale of real human
suffering. After Graham’s move, Emilius
O. Randall was hired as the Assistant Secretary to the Society, assuming
Graham’s duties in Columbus, and Graham was commissioned to complete the
volumes he currently had in the works.
Increasingly debilitated by the toll of his illness, the effects of the
morphine used to treat his asthma, insomnia, depression, and pressing money
woes, Graham poured out his fears and frustrations in an avalanche of letters
that purported to keep Randall informed about his progress on the overdue
volumes. Volume 4 was prepared by
Graham over the years 1891-1895, then sent to Randall and published in January
1896 (not in November as some issues state).
Volume 5 was published in August 1897.
Graham officially resigned as Secretary of the Society in November 1894
although both he and Randall had jointly held the title since March of that
year.
[5]. Beginning in
January 1898 there was an attempt to begin a regular “quarterly” format,
although it took several years to settle into the four issues. Editor Randall finally regularized the
quarterlies into a format similar to that which appears today.
[6]. This issue—in
some versions—was erroneously dated “November,” but was in fact issued in
October 1898.
[7]. At this point
the 74th General Assembly reprinted by special provision the first eight
volumes of the quarterly. Editorial
notes suggest that two other such printings had previously been done in this
fashion.
[8]. As the first
two issues and the supplement (which was the journal’s first index) were
sufficient to complete the bound volume, the editor’s prefatory note promised
that...“the quarterlies hereafter issued will be on such dates as to complete
the volume with each current year, thereby avoiding much confusion which has
arisen from the fact that the volume began with July and ended with April. It will begin hereafter with January and end
with October as it properly should.”
[9]. This index to
Volume 12 was issued only when the quarterlies for 1903 appeared in bound
form. The editor promised that “the
custom of indexing each volume as they appear will hereafter be
followed.” As will be noted from
further entries, the custom of an annual index has continued to this day. This compiler has tried to indicate whether
the annual index appeared in the fourth issue of the year (the page numbers
appear in brackets under the issue the index appeared in) or was published as a
supplement with cumulative table of contents and other items necessary for
library binding purposes.
[11]. This compiler
had to guess at the breaks between these issues (see asterisks) by looking at
pagination and signature breaks in the bound copies. Until a loose copy of either issue appears and reveals the
original pagination, this will stand as correct.

Here again the Ohio Legislature issued a complete run of bound reprints
(Volumes 1-23) in 1917.
[14]. There is no
clue in the editor’s copies as to the January and April issues being issued
independently. Apparently they were
issued as a single issue due to the importance of the “Education Legislation”
article, which makes up the entire journal.
[15]. The index to
this volume was divided into three parts because, as the editor states, “these
articles are of such value in themselves that there will be undoubtedly a
demand for their publication separately.”
[16]. Although it
initially appears that there were only three issues during 1919, internal
evidence suggests that there must have been an October issue. The Annual Meeting reports that the
quarterlies have appeared on time, and, as this meeting was held in August, the
minutes must have been published in the October issue. Therefore, until a loose copy of either the
July or October issues can be found, this compiler has chosen an arbitrary page
break between the two issues based upon an estimate of page numbers per issue
and the evidence of signature breaks in the bound copies.
[17]. There seems
to have been a problem with these issues appearing late (see Editor’s Notes in
the April and July issues and in the Annual Meeting Minutes). The Annual Meeting Minutes were published in
the supplement due to the late date of the meeting that year. An effort was made to have the 1921 issues
arrive on time. A bound set of Volumes
1-28 was published at this time and was mailed to all life members of the
society.
[18]. The April
issue was dedicated as a memorial to Emilius Oviatt Randall, long-time editor
of the journal.
[19]. For many
years the index and volume contents were issued independently of the final
issue of the quarterly. Libraries and
other institutions would then use these extra pages when binding the
volume. Occasionally, the editor would
also publish Annual Meeting Minutes, a separate index for a special article, or
a prefatory note with this supplement.
[20]. The
pagination of the final issue of 1928 is short apparently due to the fact that
the Annual Meeting Minutes were planned to run in this issue. Readers will note a gap of more than a
year-and-a-half between the forty-second and forty-third Annual Meetings
(October 8, 1927, to May 4, 1929). Society
Secretary Charles B. Galbreath’s report for the 1929 Annual Meeting states: “The change of the fiscal year of the state
by the General Assembly at its session in 1927, made it desirable that a
corresponding change be made in the time of holding the Annual Meetings of the
Society. In order that the financial
statements of the activities of the Society may be included in the reports
presented, it is important that these meetings be held after the close of the
fiscal year. The completion of the
south wing of the Museum and Library Building and the pending of budget
requests before the session of the Legislature were additional considerations
that seemed to make it advisable to postpone the meeting of the Society to this
date of our assembling. It is now
possible for the Board of Trustees to plan future expenditures within the
limitations of the funds at their disposal as a result of appropriations made
by the General Assembly at its recent session.”
[21]. The editors
note that this issue, “because of the financial depression and the curtailment
of appropriations for printing,” was reduced by “about two-thirds.”
[22]. There is an
interesting note, under the heading “Our Alibi,” which remarks that due to the
“depression” monies for the year 1933 were severely cut. These cuts caused some irregularity in the
journal’s scheduled appearance and threatened to suspend publication. Fortunately, the state “legislature finally
came to the relief of the Society.”
[23]. This issue is
a memorial to the late Charles Burleigh Galbreath who served as editor of the
journal for fourteen years. Galbreath
died in 1934.
[24]. The
cumulative Table of Contents for volumes 44-49 are found at the beginning of
each volume and are listed alphabetically by author.
[29]. Cumulative
Contents equal the Index of authors (see footnote 24). Loose copies of this volume cannot be
found. Unfortunately, the bound copies
do not indicate the month of issuance, and Volume 48 shows a single month while
Volume 50 shows a hyphenated month of issuance. Until a loose copy or some other proof can be found to prove the
month issued, this compiler has chosen to show the single month as in Volume
48.
[30]. This General
Index, although it is bound at the end of the volume, was issued with the
January-March 1942 issue—along with the cumulative contents, which was then
bound at front of the volume and took the place of an “Index of Authors.”
[31]. This General
Index combines the “heretofore separate” Subject and Title Index, the
alphabetical author table of contents, and General Index that appeared in the
earlier volumes.
[32]. Although
inconsistent with the pagination practice of other volumes, this pagination is
correct as listed for the Binding Supplement/General Index.
[33]. This is the
last volume to appear with the roman numeral volume numbers. For reasons of simplicity and consistency,
an editorial decision was made to show all volume numbers in arabic numerals
throughout this index.
[34]. For reasons
unknown, only three numbers appeared during 1962. One can see by examining the numbering and pagination that the
April issue was intentionally omitted.
[37]. These three
issues were combined to commemorate the dedication of a new building at the
Rutherford B. Hayes Library and Museum and feature a variety of Hayes articles.
[38]. A mistake was
made in the pagination of this volume.
The Autumn issue, which should have begun on page 209, instead was
started on 109, thus in the Cumulative Contents and in the Annual Index, the
pages are marked with an asterisk (*).
Note that in this index the page numbers are given as they are numbered,
which means that the reader must simply check to see if this is the Autumn or
combined Winter, Spring, and Summer number.
[39]. This combined
issue was a “special theme” issue featuring articles concerning sociopolitical
life in Ohio at the turn of the century.
[40]. This combined
issue was a special number devoted almost entirely to Donald A. Hutslar’s “The
Log Architecture of Ohio.”
[41]. It appears
the editors were having a difficult time getting the issues out on a quarterly
basis and thus combined issues in an attempt to catch up.
[42]. There is a
slight gap in pagination between the end of the Autumn volume and the beginning
of the index because these indices were published separately, often with the
cumulative table of contents. In the
process of binding, the contents page has been moved or removed along with
volume title pages so that there appears to be a gap or mispagination where
originally there was not.
[43]. Budget cuts
and various other factors caused the journal to cease publication as a
quarterly. For two years the journal
appeared as a single annual issue, and in 1984 its publication schedule was
increased to include two biannual issues per year. The quarterly “Numbers” were discontinued to avoid confusion when
referring to the former Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn issues and the new
Winter-Spring and Summer-Autumn issues.
