The Board of Trustees of the Ohio State
Archae-
ological and Historical Society met in
annual meeting
March 26, 1931, at 2 o'clock p. m. in
the trustees' room
of the Museum and Library Building.
The following members were present:
Johnson,
Bareis, Florence, Orton, Spetnagel,
Goodman and
Hinkle. Secretary Galbreath and
Director Shetrone
were also present.
Secretary Galbreath read the minutes of
the annual
meeting held March 29, 1930, which were
approved.
Mr. Hinkle nominated the following
officers for the
ensuing year: President, Arthur C.
Johnson; First Vice-
President, George F. Bareis; Second
Vice-President,
Edward Orton, Jr.; Treasurer, Oscar F.
Miller; Di-
rector, H. C. Shetrone; Secretary,
Librarian and Editor,
C. B. Galbreath.
The nominations were seconded by
General Florence.
Mr. Goodman moved the nominations be
closed, the
rules suspended and the Secretary cast
the vote for the
persons nominated. The motion was
seconded and unani-
mously carried.
On motion of Mr. Spetnagel, seconded by
Mr. Bareis,
all of the members of the staff and
employes on the staff

of the Society were elected to their
respective positions
at the salaries fixed in appropriations
by the General
Assembly as indicated in the
Treasurer's report.
Mr. Hinkle moved that the President
appoint a com-
mittee on new constitution. The motion
was seconded
and unanimously agreed to. The
President appointed on
this committee Mr. Hinkle, Chairman;
Mr. Spetnagel,
Mr. Miller and General Orton.
On motion of Mr. Hinkle, duly seconded,
the Presi-
dent was authorized to appoint a
committee on the death
of Mr. Wood and Professor Hine.
President Johnson
appointed the following committee: Mr.
Dudley T.
Fisher, Sr., and Mr. George F. Bareis.
President Johnson and Mr. Bareis
discussed briefly
the appointment of committees.
The President announced that he would
call a meet-
ing of the Board of Trustees for the
same date as the
annual meeting to confirm certain
things. He announced
that the new constitution would be
submitted to vote
on April 30. On motion of General
Florence, the Secre-
tary was directed to distribute copies
of the new con-
stitution to members of the Society.
The motion was
agreed to.
On motion of Mr. Spetnagel, the
Secretary was
authorized, as far as means for their
publication was
available, to distribute bound volumes
of the publica-
tions of the Society to public, college
and university
libraries in the State and to seek an
appropriation two
years hence for a re-publication of all
the volumes to
be sold to private parties at cost of
publication.
The Board of Trustees then adjourned.

ANNUAL MEETING
FORENOON SESSION
The Annual Meeting of the Society
assembled in
the auditorium of the Museum and
Library Building
in adjourned session shortly after 10 o'clock Thursday
morning, April 30, President Johnson in
the chair.
The order of unfinished business was
announced and
in response to a question by the
President, the Secretary
stated that the unfinished business was
the consideration
of a new constitution which had been drafted
by a com-
mittee appointed at the meeting of the
Board of Trus-
tees March 26, 1931. The report of the
committee had
been printed and distributed to the
members of the
Society Thursday night, April 23.
The President announced that the report
of the com-
mittee was before the meeting for
action. The Society
on motion decided to consider the new
constitution sec-
tion by section.
The first section of the proposed
constitution which
provided that "the name of this
Society shall be The
Ohio State Historical Society,"
was amended to read
"the name of this Society shall be
The Ohio Archaeologi-
cal and Historical Society."
After this change in the proposed
constitution there
was discussion of some of the important
features of the
proposed constitution and further
action was deferred
until the annual meeting of next year.
President John-
son called Mr. L. F. Sater to the
chair.
Article VII, Section 1, of the present
constitution
was then amended to read as follows:

This constitution may be amended by a
majority vote at any
annual meeting of the Society. All amendments shall be
proposed
in writing, signed by at least ten voting members,
posted in the
office of the Director and Secretary at
least ten days, and after-
ward mailed to all members qualified to
vote at least sixty days
before the annual meeting, with a brief
statement of reasons pro
and con, if there is opposition and the
same is made in writing to
the Secretary. Provision shall be made for voting by
proxy and
by absent voters' ballot on amendments
to the end that all members
entitled to vote under this
constitution may exercise that right and
have their votes counted.
Article V, Section 1, of the
constitution was amended
to fix the day of the annual meetings
of the Society on
Tuesday of the last full week of April.
The reports of the Secretary, Treasurer
and Direc-
tor, which were read at the previous
meeting, were pre-
sented in printed form.
Professor W. T. Utter of Denison
University made
a report for the Committee on
Cooperation, which has
already been instrumental in the issue
of the first volume
of Ohio Historical Collections. This
report will appear
in full in the Quarterly.
Professor Harlow Lindley next gave an
address on
local historical society activities in
which he acquainted
the audience with the organization of
new local historical
societies and urged the continued
encouragement of this
work.
The Society then adjourned to meet at 2
o'clock in
the afternoon.
AFTERNOON SESSION
Promptly at 2 o'clock the Society
assembled with
Director Shetrone in the chair. After
some introductory
remarks by the Director, Ohio songs
were sung by
Irene Cotton Stahl, accompanied by
Olive Clevenger,

pianist, and H. R. Goodwin on the
mandola. The Direc-
tor then introduced the speaker of the
afternoon, Pro-
fessor Asa E. Martin, who presented an
interesting and
highly practical address on
"Research in State History.
its Problems and Opportunities."
This address will
appear later in the Quarterly of
the Society.
Secretary Galbreath read his poem
entitled "Ohio,"
three stanzas of which were afterward
sung by Irene
Cotton Stahl, the audience joining in
the singing of the
final stanza.
Recognition of outstanding gifts to the
Society was
next announced. The Secretary presented
to Mr. John
H. James of Urbana a life membership in
the Society
for his service in collecting a
remarkable library of
Ohioana and presenting to the Society
the Journal of
the Northwest Territory. He next
presented to Pro-
fessor Harlow Lindley a life membership
in the Society
to be transferred by him to Mr. Albert
G. Giddings, a
grandson of Joshua R. Giddings, who was
designated
by the Giddings descendants to receive
this honor in
recognition of their outstanding gift
of manuscripts and
relics to the Society.
The Griswold sisters, Miss Ruth
Griswold of Worth-
ington, and Mrs. Harriet McCullough of
Columbus,
great-granddaughters of Ezra Griswold,
first settler of
Worthington, Ohio, and early newspaper
editor, pre-
sented a collection of manuscript
journals, dockets, maps,
letters and some interesting pioneer
relics. Ezra Gris-
wold came with his family from
Connecticut to Worth-
ington in 1803. His son, Brigadier
General George
Griswold was mayor and postmaster of
the village. The

Griswold home in Worthington is still
standing and is
occupied by the family.
Announcement was made of the
presentation of In-
scription Rock and the site of
Buffington Island Me-
morial State Park by Judge and Mrs. C.
E. Peoples of
Pomeroy, Ohio.
The Secretary then read memorial
tributes to the
late Professor James S. Hine and
Treasurer-Trustee
Edwin F. Wood.
The meeting then adjourned.
A delightful dinner was served at 6
o'clock in the
Faculty Club rooms. At this function
there were brief
inspirational addresses by President
Rightmire and
General Edward Orton, Jr. The guests
then withdrew
to University Hall where a capacity
audience with
closest attention heard Hamlin Garland
deliver his ad-
dress on "The Westward March of
Settlement." He
carried the vast audience with every
utterance of his
faultless English and was most heartily
applauded at
the conclusion of his address. The
audience came with
high expectations and left thoroughly
satisfied and en-
thusiastic in their expressions of
appreciation.
President Rightmire of the Ohio State
University
presided at the evening sessions and
introduced the dis-
tinguished speaker.
