Minutes of the Meeting of the
Ohio Academy of History,
Columbus, April 13, 1957
One hundred historians attended the
spring meeting of the Ohio Academy
of History at the Ohio State Museum on
Saturday, April 13, 1957.
At one of the two concurrent morning
sessions, Erving E. Beauregard of
the University of Dayton introduced
Edward J. Goodman of Xavier
University, who presented a paper on
"Spanish Nationalism in the Struggle
Against Napoleon," and Alfred D.
Low of Marietta College, whose subject
was "Lenin on the Question of
Nationality." Alfred A. Skerpan of Kent
State University commented on the
papers. Presiding over the other session
was Donald P. Gavin of John Carroll
University. A paper, "The Centennial
of the Dred Scott Decision," by
Harold Schwartz of Kent State University,
was followed by pertinent remarks by
Paul Murphy of Ohio State University
and Paul I. Miller of Hiram College.
For the luncheon at noon, the Academy
once again enjoyed the hospitality
of the Ohio State University Faculty
Club. Subsequent to the business
meeting, a resume of which appears
below, the Rev. W. Eugene Shiels of
Xavier University delivered the featured
address, "The Place of History
in University Education."
The afternoon program at the Museum
included a panel discussion on
"History and Current Affairs: The
Problem of Synthesis" and a session on
international relations. Carl Wittke of
Western Reserve University served
as moderator for the panel, the members
of which were Helen Kaslo of
Wooster College, Robert W. Twyman of
Bowling Green State University,
James Wolfenden of Wittenberg College,
and Mary Young of Ohio State
University. As chairman of the
concurrent session, William L. Fisk of
Muskingum College introduced Charles R.
Ritcheson of Kenyon College,
whose paper was entitled "Toward a
Revision of Anglo-American Relations,
1783-1795." Comments were offered
by Richard C. Knopf of the Anthony
Wayne Parkway Board and Thomas L. Moir
of Heidelberg College.
The business session, held immediately
after the luncheon, was conducted
by Grover C. Platt of Bowling Green
State University, president of the Ohio
