4 Later, in a retrospective speech in
the senate, Worthington remarked, "We have had sufficient,
and more than sufficient cause of war

Campbell, who had returned home
because he thought congress would
adjourn in order to give "longer time for the Executive to
have made ready before the 'Word was
given, fire,'" wrote Worthington on the day before the
senate voted for war that he hoped the
"war step" would not be a "premature one." Alexander
Campbell to Worthington, June 17, 1812.
