The Ohio Historical Society's Local History Office recently established a

lending library of over 300 books, booklets, tapes, and slide/tape programs

dealing with the preservation and interpretation of local history. Available

to all incorporated historical organizations in Ohio, the materials may be

checked out for three weeks with no charge beyond return postage. To ob-

tain a complete listing of the available items and a copy of the operating rules,

The Ohio Academy of History recently conferred its OAH Publication

Award to No Strength Without Union: An Illustrated History of Ohio Workers,

1803-1980, by Raymond Boryczka and Lorin Lee Cary. Published by the

Ohio Historical Society in 1983, the book was sponsored by the Ohio Labor

History Project and funded by the Ohio General Assembly. Other nominees

for this award included: Erving E. Beauregard's Old Franklin: The Eternal

Touch. A History of Franklin College, New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio;

The New Eden: James Kilbourne and the Development of Ohio, by Goodwin

Berquest and Paul C. Bowers, Jr.; Frederick C. Dahlstrand's Amos Bronson

Alcott: An Intellectual Biography; Robert L. Jones' History of Agriculture in

Ohio to 1880; Otis C. Mitchell's Hitler Over Germany: The Establishment of

the Nazi Dictatorship; Williamson Murray's Strategy for Defeat: The Luft-

waffe, 1933-1945; and Steel Valley University: The Origin of Youngstown State,

by Alvin W. Skardon.

 

 

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society Library officially opened on June

1, 1984. Housed in a remodeled carriage house and garage, the closed-stack

library and reading room offers a wide range of regional archives, newspa-

pers, and an extensive book collection. The library will be open Tuesday-

Friday, 9:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:00, by appointment. Admission for MVHS

members is free; non-members may either purchase six-month passes ($3.00

students/$6.00 adults) or pay according to the current fee schedule at The

Indiana University Press recently reissued Gilbert C. Fite's 1981 book,

American Farmers: The New Minority, in paperback edition. Copies may be

obtained by writing to the Indiana University Press, Tenth & Morton Streets,

Bloomington, Indiana 47405.

Other publications of interest to our readers include: a junior high text-

book, Ohio's Heritage, by James L. Burke of Capital University and Kenneth

Davison of Heidelburg College; and an 1880 Census Index compiled by the

Gallia County Historical Society.
