Minutes of the Meeting of the
Ohio Academy of History,
Columbus, March 26, 1960
THE OHIO ACADEMY OF HISTORY held its twenty-seventh annual meet-
ing at the Ohio State Museum on
Saturday, March 26, 1960.
Two concurrent sessions were held in the
morning and two in the
afternoon. John Hall Stewart of Western
Reserve University acted as
chairman of the modern European history
section, at which James M.
Laux of the University of Cincinnati
delivered a paper on "De Gaulle in
Power, 1944-1946," and Thomas E.
Auge of John Carroll University
spoke on "The Trials of the French
Collaborators, 1944-1945." Dis-
cussion of these two papers was led by
Willard A. Smith of the Uni-
versity of Toledo and Henry N. Whitney
of Kent State University.
In the field of American history,
Stanton Ling Davis of Case Institute
of Technology presided over a session
featuring papers by Thomas A.
Flinn of Oberlin, on "Continuity
and Change in Ohio Politics (Pre-
Civil War to the Present)," and
Eugene C. Drozdowski of Kent State
University, on "Edwin M. Stanton,
Critic of the Lincoln Administra-
tion." Eugene C. Murdock of
Marietta College and Robert Hartje of
Wittenberg University led a spirited
discussion. With Harold J.
Grimm of Ohio State University in the
chair, the afternoon session on
historiography included papers entitled
"James Ford Rhodes: The
Problem of Objectivity in the Writing of
History," presented by Robert
Cruden of Baldwin-Wallace College, and
"Historism and Friedrich
Meinecke," prepared by Helmut
Haeussler of Wittenberg University.
Discussion leaders for this session were
Duane D. Smith of the Univer-
sity of Toledo and John C. Rule of Ohio
State University. The final
session, devoted to Southeast Asian
history, was chaired by Morton B.
Stratton of Denison University. David R.
Sturtevant of Muskingum
College read a paper entitled
"Nativistic Movements in the Philippines:
A Study in Protest Patterns," and
John F. Cady of Ohio University
presented his views on "Recent
Developments in Burma: The Swing of
the Pendulum." Frank W. Ikle of
Miami University and Ellsworth
C. Carlson of Oberlin College led the
discussion of these two topics.

The annual luncheon at the Ohio Union
was attended by 119 per-
sons and was presided over by James H.
Rodabaugh, president of the
Academy. John F. Cady, chairman of the
Committee on Awards,
presented the 1959 Certificate of Award
for Historical Achievement to
Hoyt Landon Warner of Kenyon College for
his book, The Life of
Mr. Justice Clarke: A Testament to
the Power of Liberal Dissent in
America. In recognition of distinguished service in the field of
history,
James H. Rodabaugh also announced the
presentation of an honorary
life membership in the Academy to Howard
Robinson of Oberlin Col-
lege. The luncheon session closed with a
rousing address by William
T. Utter, Senior Professor, Denison University,
entitled "Geometric
Progression: What About It?"
The business meeting of the Academy was
held at the Ohio State
Museum following the luncheon. A report
on the Fall Meeting at
Miami University was delivered by
President James H. Rodabaugh,
and Phillip Shriver of Kent State
University, chairman of the Pro-
gram Committee, expressed his
appreciation to the members of his com-
mittee and to the speakers and
discussants.
Thomas LeDuc of Oberlin College
presented the report of the Com-
mittee on Standards and called on Robert
Bremner of Ohio State
University and Harris G. Warren of Miami
University to comment
upon sections of the report which they
had prepared. Copies of the
report were made available to Academy
members and it was adopted by
a vote of the membership. The committee
specifically recommended
that the Academy resume publication of
an annual bibliography of the
works of Academy members.
The chairman of the Committee on
Nominations presented the fol-
lowing slate of officers for 1960-61 and
moved its adoption:

Wannamacher, Kent State University
For secretary-treasurer--William G.
Keener, Ohio Historical Society
The motion was seconded and unanimously
approved.
The secretary-treasurer then presented a
report on Academy finances
and called for the appointment of a
committee to study means of resolv-
ing the recurring problems of deficits.
He also reported that a new roster
of members would be prepared during the
year.
Thomas LeDuc of Oberlin College,
speaking on behalf of the college,
extended an invitation to the Academy to
hold its Fall Meeting on the
OHIO ACADEMY OF HISTORY 293
Oberlin campus on October 28-29. The
invitation was gratefully
accepted.
The president thanked his fellow
officers and members of the various
committees for their cooperation during
his tenure, after which the
meeting was adjourned.
