BOOK REVIEWS
The Territorial
Papers of the United States. Compiled
and edited
by Clarence E. Carter.
Vol. XII, The Territory of Michigan,
1829-1837, continued. (Washington, United States Govern-
ment Printing Office,
1945. viii
+ 1378pp.
This continuation of
the territorial papers for Michigan re-
lates to the period
from 1829-37 and in the prefatory note the
editor explains that
while the volumes on Michigan were being
prepared some of the
documentary sources were not only moved
from their original
depositories to the National Archives but in
their new location
many of them were reclassified. Some of the
records were moved to
the Library of Congress and only the
Post Office files
remained in that department.
The volume is prepared
with its usual care and is in very
readable type, a
tribute to the editor whose trials and tribulations
one can better
appreciate after hearing a recital of these at the
last meeting of the
Society of American Archivists and the Ameri-
can Association for
State and Local History. B. E.
