The Whittlesey People

The Whittlesey culture lived in the river valleys that drain into Lake Erie from the Black River to the vicinity of Conneaut. It may have spread as far south as Tuscarawas County. Toward the end of prehistoric times (A.D. 1350-1650), Whittlesey villages were built on high spots overlooking major rivers. These villages were protected by earthen walls, possibly topped with wooden stockades. The Brecksville Township Works in Cuyahoga County and Conneaut Fort in Ashtabula County are examples of these fortified sites.
