Section Eight-D: Monongahela Culture

The Late Prehistoric groups of eastern Ohio have not been studied as much as the Fort Ancient and Whittlesey cultures. Many sites in that part of the state have been destroyed by strip mining or looted by relic hunters. The few villages that have been studied, in Harrison, Belmont, and Jefferson Counties, were occupied by people related to the Monongahela culture. That culture was centered in northern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania.
