Marine Shell Artifacts

The first Ohioans gathered nearly all of their raw materials close to where they lived, but they also obtained items from distant places. The Glacial Kame and other Late Archaic cultures of the Ohio Valley acquired objects made from marine shells native to the west coast of Florida. Most of these items were likely used as ornaments. It is not clear if they were made in the south and traded as finished products or if the shells were brought here to be worked on. So far, archaeologists have not found any sites, north or south, where such items were made.
