Rattlesnake Motifs

Rattlesnakes are common motifs that may have been linked with fertility. Two of them are intertwined on the stone palette which was likely used for grinding pigment or medicine. Sometimes animal images were combined, perhaps to depict mythical beasts. An especially frightful creature for the Cherokee Indians was part snake, part deer, and part bird. This is clearly a figure with roots in the beliefs of Mississippian times.
