1.1 Archaeology in the Field.

Archaeologists literally dig up information about past societies by excavating sites. A site, defined as any place where people lived past, can be a temporary camp, a permanent village, a mound, a historic fort, or even an urban neighborhood. The objects shaped by human hands, or artifacts, human and animal bones, and plant remains found at a site are important clues to the culture of the occupants. However, even more important are the relationships between those items and the features -- refuse pits, wells, house remnants, sail layers, hearths –- in which they are found.
