Title

4.14 Glacial Kame Birdstones

Description

Birdstones are perhaps the most puzzling of all prehistoric American Indian objects. Although they are usually linked with the Glacial Kame people, they have also been found in Late Archaic sites in New York and Pennsylvania. Their name comes from their form, which appears to be that of a bird with tapered bill and flared tail. Some have bumps where the eyes would be ("popeyes"); some seem to show only the bird's head and neck mounted on an oval base ("bust-type"). Some are short and stubby while others are long and elegant. Image number: FOCase29
