5.7 Social Organization/ Ceremonialism
Description
The mounds and earthworks scattered across much of Ohio are the most obvious legacies of the ancient Woodland cultures. Archaeological research leaves little doubt that these sites were built by native American Indians, not by a mysterious race of "Moundbuilders." Research also has shown that the Woodland cultures developed in the Ohio Valley from earlier Archaic groups. The Woodland cultures did not move to this area from Mexico or some other distant place.
