8a.3 Fort Ancient Hunting, Collecting, And Fishing

The Fort Ancient people hunted, fished, and collected wild plant foods in much the same ways as their Woodland and Archaic ancestors. Yet they did have the advantage of bows and arrows to increase their hunting efficiency. Fort Ancient hunters may have worn deer-skin disguises to get within close range of deer, much like the Indians of 16th century Florida. Groups of men probably traveled 200 to 300 miles from home on hunting trips. Perhaps their wives and older children joined them to help with the butchering. Besides planting, tending, and harvesting the crops, the Fort Ancient women probably also collected many wild plants for food. As with earlier cultures, nuts were still important as a food source
