Title
5b.17 The Hopewell Mound Group
Description
The Hopewell culture is named for the Hopewell Mound Group. The site is located on the North Fork of Paint Creek west of Chillicothe, Ohio. It is a rectangular area of 115 acres enclosed by earth walls 6 feet high and 35 feet wide at the base. These walls lie along the edge of the terrace above the creek, then turn and run up the bluff where they follow the contour of the higher land. East of the large enclosure, a square with sides 850 feet long surrounding 16 acres once existed. Small mounds stood just inside openings in the middle of each wall. Within the large earthwork, there once was a round enclosure 350 feet across and a D-shaped enclosure 2000 feet around. The smaller earthworks, along with some of the mounds, have been destroyed by erosion, farming, and construction. Image Number: FOCase54
