9.13 Greeneville Treaty Pipe

This pipe was smoked by the signers of the Greenville Treaty to show their agreement with its provisions. It is made in traditional Indian style with a Minnesota catlinite bowl inlaid with lead and an ornate wooden stem. The Indians of the historic era often used strings and belts of wampum to declare war, make peace, show condolence, and symbolize other major decisions. Some belts also had religious significance. The Indians did not use wampum for money. The beads were made from special white and purple seashells. Catalog Number: H 39471, Image Number: M00203
