Title
4.15 Functions of Birdstones
Description
Birdstones are generally made of banded slate or of porphyry, a type of rock containing large crystals. Late Archaic artisans used attractive raw materials and the natural bands of color in the slate to make their work appealing to the eye. This suggests that birdstones were artistic as well as functional objects. Catalog number: , A 0060/000109_1
