Title

7.4 Mississippian Effigy Pipe

Description

The v-shaped lines around the eyes of the human effigy stone pipe and on the copper effigy are often found on human figures in Mississippian art. Archaeologists believe that they depict the eye patch of the peregrine falcon and were linked with a military cult. Such lines may actually have been painted on warriors' faces. The pipe is a typical Mississippian bowl form. A wooden or reed stem was placed in the image's mouth for smoking. , Catalog Number: A 3728/000026, Image Number: AL07441
