Letter stating that he declined the position of 1st Lieutenant, Company B, 24th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry because his appointment would not have been agreeable to the officers and men of the company, that his friends had asked that he be appointed Regimental Quartermaster, that Columbiana County had five companies in the service, that he was proud that one of these companies was known as his company, that no one had been earlier or more sincere in answering Dennison's call and sustaining Dennison's administration and the country, and that he hoped Dennison would help him to secure a position as Quartermaster or some equally honorable position.

Thompson had been Deputy Clerk of Ross County, that Company C was stationed on the Northwestern Virginia Railroad guarding bridges and tunnels, that his men had engaged in several skirmishes with parties of secessionists, and that his men had generally performed their duty well.
