Letter stating that New Richmond had furnished two companies now in the service and thereby committed most of the men who could be spared, that they wanted to form a company for home protection, that they had 40 men enrolled for a company who would provide themselves with a cheap uniform if they had an assurance they could procure arms, that they were on the Ohio River subject to invasion by those having "ill feeling", that they had frequently heard threats from Cynthiana, Kentucky and other places caused by there being a considerable number of colored people in New Richmond, and that they wished to organize so that all would know that they were prepared to defend themselves and ready for any emergency.

Letter stating that local residents were much excited by the war news [Union defeat at First Manassas], that some of his neighbors had requested him to get up a cavalry company, that he could get up one of the best companies in the state if he had the order to do so and assurance of being accepted at once, that the company would generally consist of middle aged farmers who were good horsemen, and that many of the men possessed and preferred using their own horses. Letter bears pencilled notation stating that cavalry companies were required to furnish their own horses and received 40cents per day for use and risk.

Letter asking if the three months' men would be ordered to Columbus to be mustered out or be discharged at theirplaces of residence; and stating that all of the three months' men residing in the county at the present time formerly belonged to Company F, 7th Ohio Volunteer Militia and that they were scattered throughout the county, that he thought the most judicious plan would be to have them all gather at Ravenna, that he needed something to aid him in gaining a living honestly, that his health was quite poor and had been for several weeks, that his sickness had been brought on by excessive drill, that the whole duty of drilling and disciplining the company had fallen to him since the lieutenants were "entirely ignorant" in such matters, that he had drilled his company from six to ten hours per day while at Camp Taylor in Cleveland, and that he had caught a severe cold which settled on his lungs.
