Letter asking Buckingham to designate the number of their regiment; and stating that according to the Columbus Journal, the number 3 had been assigned to another regiment of cavalry, that Kennett was aware Buckingham did not formally recognize his regiment as belonging to the military organization of Ohio, but under the agreement between Governor [William] Dennison and Major General [John C.] Fremont, the former permitted the sons of Ohio to rally in defense of Missouri, and that the State of Ohio should have credit for the contribution of her sons to the national defense against traitors.

Letter stating that he was advised by friends in Ohio that officers of experience were needed in Ohio to be employed instructing troops in drill and that staff appointments were open to such officers, that he had extensive experience in drilling recruits and at one time had the entire charge of instructing a military school in tactics, that he considered himself thoroughly competent to instruct in Hardee's tactics, that he had commanded the right flank company of the 1st Connecticut Regiment through the late campaign in Virginia, that the regiment returned home a few weeks before and had been discharged, that he was forming a company for one of the new regiments, but much preferred a staff appointment if he could secure one out of the State of Connecticut, and that he would send whatever testimonials were required as to character and capacity.
