Letter stating that Captain Black had suggested to him that Colonel Gilmore's regiment might be speedily recruited by moving it to Athens as soon as the 18th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry left, which he supposed would be very soon as the 18th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry was nearly or quite full, that they had subsistence at Athens and would not be compelled to purchase any, that Black said the Lieutenant Colonel of the 22nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry had resigned, and that Black would be glad to fill the vacancy.

Letter requesting a discharge for William H. Koch of Company G, 16th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (three months' service); and stating that Koch was 5 feet, 10 inches tall with grey eyes and dark hair, that Koch was twenty- five years of age and a clerk by occupation when enrolled, that Koch had the rank of 1st Corporal in Company G, 16th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (three months' service), that Koch was born in Millersburg, Holmes County, Ohio, and that Koch's old discharge was destroyed by accident so that it was worthless.

Letter stating that he had made application to the Adjutant General for authority to raise an infantry company to consist of young Irishmen, that the company was to be commanded by Thomas Laden as Captain, James Moran as 1st Lieutenant, and Robert A. M. Kelly (his son) as 2nd Lieutenant, and that with the understanding these men were to be the officers, he had no doubt but that he could raise a company at once.

Letter stating that Mr. Garrett declined to raise a company of infantry, but he proposed to raise one to be commanded by Thomas Laden as Captain, James Moran as 1st Lieutenant, and Robert A.M. Kelly (his son) as 2nd Lieutenant, that with these men as officers, he could raise a company at once, that this company would consist primarily of Irishmen who worked for the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Rail Road Company, that the proposed Captain had considerable experience in military drill, though never in active service, that the other proposed officers had no previous training, but he would vouch for them, and that although his son was only eighteen, he was stout, healthy, energetic, and fully able to stand the fatigue.

Stephenson's company [K], 36th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry of Jackson County, Ohio, that the 62 signees requested Dennison not to give B[enjamin] F. Stearns his commission as 1st Lieutenant because Stearns was not a man fit for the place to which he was elected, that Stearns was not a drilled man, and that a majority of the company wanted Stearns set aside. Bears a note stating that Stearns was commissioned on September 13, 1861, and the protest was received on September 28, 1861.

Letter stating that he had some idea of entering the service and believed his education and experience as an engineer would be advantageous in the artillery; requesting an order to recruit a company for that branch; stating that since he did not know the routine necessary to procure the requisite papers, he was making application to Mason as his only "friend at court"; and enclosing a letter of reference from S. Shelabarger.

William Porterfield, Dunkirk, Hardin County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that he could raise about 40 or 50 good recruits in the area provided they were sent to the 4th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry under the command of Colonel [James] Cantwell, that he was 11 miles from Kenton and 17 miles from Findlay, and that with the proper authority, he could raise a whole company in ten or fifteen days; and providing references.

Letter stating that he had enlisted a company of infantry which was ready to go into camp, that his company was ordered to report at Akron on September 30 to start for camp, that the men had expressed a desire to go into the 29th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, but would cheerfully go where Buckingham directed, and that he anticipated objections to the men going to Camp Giddings because it was 80 or 90 miles in an opposite direction to Columbus where the men would probably go before long.

Letter stating that since making application for authority to raise a company at Zanesville, circumstances had arisen which made it unlikely a company could be raised at that time, that Mr. Hosmer, who they depended on for Captain, expected to be employed in the Engineer Department having been for a long time engaged on the Coast Survey, that he did not feel willing to, or capable of, taking command of a company, that he feared for the present they must abandon the idea of getting a company locally, and that he still wanted to enter the service in some capacity and preferred a position suited to his business abilities; requesting the appointment of Regimental Quartermaster in one of the regiments currently forming; and citing John Q. Lane, Assistant Quartermaster stationed at Gallipolis as a reference.

Letter stating that he wanted all necessary instruction at the earliest moment and his authority for subsisting men, that he would have 100 ready for Colonel Trimble's regiment by October 10 and 200 by October 25, that he wanted Buckingham to urge Trimble to be particular about having side tents and clothing ready for the men as soon as they arrived in camp, that he thought Camp Dennison was the best place for rendezvous, and that there were 20 old government guns at Middletown which ought to be remodeled.

Letter stating that he had returned from Henry County, Ohio, that he was very slowly succeeding in recruiting, that he might prosper more as soon as the harvesting was done, that he would be very thankful for a Lieutenant's commission, that with such a commission, he would enter Mr. Zahm's cavalry corps (Monroeville, Ohio) as drilling officer, that he was poor and had to sustain a family, and that he would be thankful even for an appointment as private clerk in the Adjutant General's Department until honored to fill a vacancy in the army; and asking Mason to be the benefactor of a brave and honest foreigner.

Letter stating that he was at work with as yet but limited success, that he had just sent a man to the country with some hope of success from that quarter, that Colonel A.E. Jones wanted Mason to extend Giffin's time and not to push Giffin, that he was doing all he could with time and money and wanted only a fair show as regarded longer time, and that Mason could expect a better report the following week.

S.M. Morrison, and William Roby, Tarlton, Pickaway County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that they had received an order from Buckingham's office to organize a light infantry company in Tarlton, that in consequence of several other companies being organized in the neighborhood, they had but about 40 men enrolled when the time given in their order expired, that their men were still willing to go, but wanted to go in a company from the immediate neighborhood of home, that they had concluded to write for a new order to raise a company for the shortest period of enlistment, and that they wanted as long a period of time as could consistently be given since volunteering went on more slowly than formerly.

Letter stating that he had left his papers of recommendation in Buckingham's hands for presentation to Governor William Dennison and was anxious to hear the result of that presentation, that Dennison promised him a careful perusal of said papers, that if he could not get the place as Major of the 54th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he wanted that of Adjutant or Quartermaster in any regiment, and that he had a claim to the place requested, having raised two companies which were currently in the field and having worked hard for both the 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the 34th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry spending both time and money in their behalf.

Letter stating that his order for recruiting extended only until that day, that he had forty-three names enrolled, but did not expect that all of them would go, that he wanted an extension of time and the authority to swear in his men, and that he could then tell very soon how many reliable men he had.

Letter stating that he deeply felt their neglect to furnish men from Marion County for the war, that he had waited to see what course could be taken and who in their midst should take it, that Mr. Williams had given him assurances that if he would take hold of the matter, he could get the authority, that notices were posted of county meetings to discuss the Union ticket, and that he got permission to attach a paragraph to the notices announcing his efforts to raise a company; asking if he should cease efforts or go on; and stating that if the opportunities to recruit at their grand rally meeting and county fair were lost, it would be in vain to cultivate the public mind so as to raise the men.
