Dye for recruiting was received, that Judge Mitchel being absent, he deemed it proper to say that the entire committee felt it would pay to have the time of Morris and Dye extended, that Morris and Dye were assigned to hard fields and the committee thought there was a good prospect of their labors for the 71st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the cause generally, that they expected Coleman and Fry, infantry recruiting Lieutenants, to be discontinued, and that McConnel already had about 60 men and would be in camp with them at Troy on October 25.

Hunter of Lancaster had applied for an appointment as Lieutenant Colonel, that it would be agreeable to Colonel N[ewton] Schleich to have Hunter assigned to his regiment, that Hunter was a most excellent man of the highest honor, the strictest integrity, and of the most correct habits, that Hunter was a brave man, and though he was not a military man, he would rapidly qualify himself for his position, that if military men could be found to fill the positions, they should of course be preferred, that since many civilians must be appointed, it remained to select men who by their bravery and zeal for the good cause of the Union and their correct habits and aptitude for learning military rules and discipline came nearest to filling the void caused by the deficiency of educated military men, that of such civilians, he did not know one who would do better than Hunter, that Hunter was cool, brave, and honest, never drank, and was in all respects a gentleman with much pride of character, and would make every exertion to do his whole duty, that Hunter was a very popular man in the community, and that Hunter's appointment would be a popular one locally and give general satisfaction.

Letter stating that early last week, when Major [John H.] Foster called on Dennison, he left recommendations for appointments for one Adjutant and three Battalion Quartermasters for the 3rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, and that not hearing of the appointments, he was afraid that the memorandum of names might have been mislaid; providing a list of the names; requesting that the appointments be made out and forwarded to Camp Worcester; and stating that as regarded the other two Adjutants which Dennison had appointed, he would not say anything more about it, but would submit to Dennison's wishes, that the Adjutants had not reported to him yet, that Major Jones had not made his appearance, that Lieutenant Colonel [Douglas A.] Murray had reported himself and was on duty, that he was highly pleased with Murray, and that Murray was a gentleman and a thorough soldier.
