O[wen] P. Ransom, Colonel, 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Camp Chase, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that Colonel Dennison had expressed a desire for active service and doubted whether on the staff of General [Ormsby M.] Mitchel he would be more useful than he was capable of being in the line of the army, that he told Dennison that there were two original vacancies of Major in the 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and suggested that Dennison apply for one of them, that Dennison declined to act in the matter himself not only on account of his relation to Governor Dennison, but also through fear that his appointment might occasion "scurrilous" articles in the papers, and that he did not think it probable such would be the case as the Colonel, by accepting a military title inferior to that which he now held, would destroy the intended effect of all "malicious" or "illnatured" comments on the part of newspaper editors; requesting that Buckingham propose to the Governor that he appoint his brother as Major in the 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry; and stating that the appointment of no other person would be more generally acceptable to the officers of the regiment.
