J[ames] B. Creviston, Adjutant, 40th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that in consequence of ill health, he sent his resignation as Adjutant of the 40th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry to headquarters and recommended H.E. McClures as his successor, that since arriving in Cincinnati, he received information that his resignation would not be accepted, and that therefore the place was not vacant and no appointment was called for.

J.J. Ennis, Lieutenant, 52nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Camp Dennison, Hamilton County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that on March 3, he and his assistants reported 35 men at regimental headquarters, that since then, they had obtained some 8 or 10 men, that an individual who had not been sworn in, after seeing that a company would be organized, came down and was now influencing the men to vote for him as Captain, that he held his commission as 2nd Lieutenant since December 7, 1861, and that he had labored arduously to recruit his men after having served a campaign in Missouri in the Benton Cadets; requesting that justice be done him; and stating that he hardly thought it just to allow an individual who had not recruited one man and who had never been sworn in to gain a position which he thought in justice belonged to him.

Letter stating that the enclosed letter sent them for publication was hardly fit to print and yet he believed it was true, that he sent it to Tod as showing the nature of the regiment which was at Camp Becket, and that the fact itself was all the suggestion he needed to make.

Brockway desired an appointment as Lieutenant in the 12th Ohio Battery, and that he had long known Brockway and thought very highly of him for such a position; and calling Buckingham's attention to the enclosed letter from Captain [J.N.] Cross in regard to Brockway.

Letter instructing Toms to proceed from Camp Chase and report to Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham with six men; and stating that he had ordered the issue of rations for five days for seven men.

William R. Putnam, Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that the friends of I[srael] W. Andrews, President of Marietta College, were endeavoring to procure his appointment as a member of the committee of examination for the military institution at West Point, that he had been intimately acquainted with Andrews for more than 20 years, that Andrews had frequently manifested an interest in the pioneers of Ohio including his venerated grandfather who he believed ought to have some credit in connection with West Point, that Andrews had a high reputation for scholarship and enlarged practical opinions, that Andrews had exerted great influence in behalf of common school and collegiate education in that part of the state, that since the start of the present difficulties, Andrews had done much by speech and pen to aid the great cause in which they were so deeply interested, that Buckingham need not hesitate in recommending Andrews to the Secretary of War as a gentleman in every way worthy to receive the appointment in question, and that he had been solicited for recommendations for the promotion and appointment of officers in the 36th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, but felt that the time had come when officers must stand on their own merits and that commanding officers were usually the better judges (especially Colonel [George] Crook).

Letter stating that he was on his way home to Mercer County, Ohio from the 40th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and that he desired to recruit eight men to fill the places of the dead and discharged; and requesting all papers necessary for transporting the recruits.

Letter stating that on Tuesday next, he had arranged for the mustering of all recruits then present in regimental quarters, that the mustering officer would require the assistance of an examining Surgeon, and that the regiment had none present on duty.

Letter stating that he had learned that Colonel [Granville] Moody had gone to Cincinnati and would be absent until Tuesday or Wednesday, that Moody had not informed him of his intention to leave nor given him any orders or instructions in regard to the government of the post [Camp Chase], and that as the command devolved upon him, he was sending his letter by a special messenger to ascertain whether Buckingham had any orders for him.

Heslip, and Martin Wiser desired an extension of their time to March 20, in order to complete their company, that together they had fifty men enrolled, and that they spoke with great confidence of being able to get a full company by March 20.

Jonathan Letterman, Medical Director, Medical Director's Office, Department of Western Virginia, Wheeling, Virginia. To Governor David Tod. Letter stating that he had been informed that Assistant Surgeon J[ohn] McCurdy of the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry would probably be promoted to Surgeon, and that such an act would be highly agreeable to the Medical Director's office; and requesting, should McCurdy be promoted, that he be assigned as Surgeon of the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, that Surgeon J[oseph] T. Webb be transferred to some other regiment, and that an Assistant Surgeon be appointed to the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
