Currie as Major, and that no announcement of Currie's promotion had yet been received, but he supposed that, in pursuance of the order regulating appointments, the promotion had been made; reporting that Currie died at Shelbyville, Tennessee on April 16; stating that the office of Major was therefore vacant; recommending the appointment of Captain Frederick J. Lock, the senior Captain of the regiment, as Major; and stating that Lock had been a faithful and meritorious officer and had well earned the place. Bears the endorsement of J[oshua] W. Letter stating that there had been a rumor for a long time of his being mustered out of the service of the United States, that on April 21, there arrived a certificate stating that he had been mustered out of service on April 2, that he went immediately to General [Henry] Halleck, accompanied by General [Lew] Wallace, and made his application, that Halleck had no information at all about his case and said he should present a written statement of it, that he had done so and was now expecting the settlement of his case by Halleck, and that at the same time, suffering from an illness of the kidneys, he turned over command of the regiment to Lieutenant Colonel [Ferdinand F.] Rempel; and asking Tod not to make any change of places whatever in the regiment until he came to Columbus or sent further information.

To Lieutenant Governor Benjamin Stanton, On Board the "Glendale", Tennessee River. Letter stating that Stanton had been informed of the death of the brave and gallant Major [Timothy D.] Edwards of the 19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, that the death of this noble officer had made vacant the position of Major in the 19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, that Captain [Charles F.] Manderson was the senior Captain, and that in the battle of Shiloh on April 7, Manderson displayed extraordinary coolness and courage and deserved immediate promotion to the position of Major to which his rank in the line entitled him; requesting that Stanton call the attention of Governor David Tod to the subject on returning to Ohio; and stating that Manderson would make a noble officer and gallantly and worthily fill the place of the lamented Edwards, that the two Ohio regiments in his brigade (19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and 59th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry) won the character of brave and gallant soldiers and officers in the great battle of Shiloh, that whatever might be said of Ohio soldiers in other armies, he could safely say that all the Ohio troops in the Army of the Ohio, commanded by Major General [Don Carlos] Buell, won immortal renown for themselves and their state and deserved the gratitude of the nation, that the soldiers of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky stood shoulder to shoulder in this greatest battle of the continent, rendered historic the field of Shiloh, and crystallized their names in the fiery ordeal of battle and rendered them immortal, and that he could mention the names of Captain [James M.] Nash and Lieutenant [Edwin S.] Myers who displayed great gallantry and bravery, but it would require him to go through the whole list of officers for all of them deported themselves worthily of their state and country.

Letter asking if the enclosed was a legal discharge and if so, what steps must be taken to collect the arrears of pay due said party, and if not a legal discharge, what steps must be taken to procure the same; and stating that the individual in question left the 78th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry while 25 miles below Florence, Alabama, that the individual in question was one of 29 who left the regiment at the same place, that the passes given these men for the purpose of reaching home were refused on the boat, that the result was that each one had to pay their own way home, that the individual in question was willing to be qualified before a justice of the peace as to the amount thus expended, that the individual in question was presumed entitled to mileage and subsistence from the place where he left the regiment to the place of his enrollment, that the individual in question was very sick and had not been able to leave the house since he came home, and that if the individual in question could get but a portion of what was due him, it would be of great service.

Letter stating that their Lieutenant Colonel had resigned and he supposed Major [James S.] Robinson would be promoted, that he wanted to receive the appointment of Major, that he deserved a better position than Adjutant, that nine companies of the regiment [82nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry] had unanimously recommended him, and that he thought the voice of the regiment should be respected; asking Maffett to call on the Governor, in connection with [Jonathan H.] Sieg, and press his claims; and stating that he spent the whole summer in assisting others to recruit and spent more time and money in raising the regiment than any man in it, and that whatever was done must be done quickly.

Letter stating that in consequence of the resignation of his commission as Captain of Company C, 43rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the same having been accepted by General [Henry W.] Halleck, there was a vacancy in the company, that he was requested by Lieutenant Colonel [Wager] Swayne to say that Colonel [J.L. Kirby] Smith and himself very much desired that 1st Lieutenant Sanford F. Timmons of the same company be promoted to the Captaincy and that 1st Sergeant John C. Hamilton, also of the same company, be made a Lieutenant, both being men fully capable to fill those positions, and that the Colonel also desired him to say that if those appointments were made, he should like to have their commissions sent soon to him.

Jacobs to the vacancy occasioned by the death of Lieutenant [John S.] Fulton, that they signed Brown's recommendation presuming that his appointment would be entirely acceptable to the company, having repeatedly heard the officers say that he was more deserving of promotion than any non-commissioned officer or Private in the company, and that it now appeared the company preferred another man for the position; and asking the privilege of withdrawing their recommendation for the appointment of Brown for the present.

Letter stating that Lieutenant Louis Schmidt had received a circular from Buckingham, relative to his recruiting, which gave him some uneasiness, that he knew Schmidt had recruited over 30 men within the time assigned him and that the rolls containing the names of the recruits were sent to Columbus, that Schmidt had been paid as 1st Lieutenant from February 9, that Schmidt made a No. 1 officer, and that he hoped the matter might be fixed so that Schmidt could receive pay for the time he was recruiting.
