Joel Haines, Captain, Company C, 17th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, West Middleburg, Logan County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that there was a vacancy in his company by the resignation of Joseph H. Pool, that he supposed the official report of the fact had not yet come to Buckingham's office though he hoped it might come soon, that he had to leave his company and return home to recruit up his health as he had been very sick, that he was on the mend again, that his company had only a 2nd Lieutenant in command and he was a 2nd Sergeant out of Company F, that this gave great confusion as there were a number of men in his company who were far superior in several ways and certain in military tactics, that it was his wish for the good of the company and the wish of the boys that Caleb B. Sharp, the present Orderly Sergeant, be promoted to fill the vacancy, that Sharp was a good man, that Sharp had made a great sacrifice of business to go into the service, and that it was very unpleasant for Sharp to be superceded by a Sergeant lower in rank and out of a junior company.

W.F. Bloor, McDowell, [Virginia]. To Friend Nevins. Letter stating that the appointment for the vacancy in the company in which he was enrolled, about which he wrote some time since, had been made, that a young man by the name of Whitcraft was the selection at home, that he was somewhat surprised inasmuch as a positive promise had been made Judge Okey by the Governor that his interest would be remembered at the earliest moment, that the Governor's attention had lately been called to the matter by Okey and others with letters of credit from his regimental officers, that the thing was done so far as his company was concerned for the present and the only chance now open was to strike for some other, and that there were now vacancies of 1st Lieutenant and 2nd Lieutenant in Company F, a vacancy in Company G, and a tender of resignation in the same company; asking, if the Governor was sincere in his promise, why not fill one of these vacancies; and stating that resignations were the order of the day, now, as the enemy was in sight, but considering the material of the majority of their officers, not to be wondered at, that apprehensions were momently entertained of an attack by the enemy reported as eight thousand strong and eleven miles from McDowell, and that they were strongly entrenched on the Shenandoah mountains and a lively time was anticipated by the boys ere long.

Joshua H. Bates, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. To the Honorable William Dennison. Letter stating that he took the liberty of troubling Dennison in reference to a matter concerning one of his army friends, that he felt Dennison had always manifested a disinterested desire to do for the good of their service whatever was in his power, that by the promotion of [Jacob] Ammen of the 24th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the Colonelcy of that regiment became vacant, that Lieutenant Colonel Fred[erick] C. Jones of that regiment was well qualified for promotion to fill the vacancy, that Jones had been in command of the regiment since he joined it, that Jones led the regiment into battle at Shiloh, behaved gallantly, and was popular with the regiment, that it had been intimated to him that an effort would be made to secure the position for another person, and that as it would be unjust to supercede Jones and a deep mortification to him, he would ask Dennison's influence on Jones' behalf.
