Patterson, that his orders dated from July 10, that he was to report to Columbus, and that this threw opposition in his way; asking if they could report to Camp Lima and go into the 99th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry of that district; and stating that the business would then be much better and easier, that they were as yet unassigned to any regiment, and that he believed it would be an advantage to be placed in the 99th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Letter stating that he had established a recruiting office for the 55th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Norwalk, that owing to the demand for labor and the high price paid for said labor, he had been unable to obtain any recruits up to the present time, and that a meeting was held at Norwalk on July 19, at which it was proposed to raise, by voluntary subscription, a sum sufficient to pay each volunteer $25 in addition to the bounty now provided by the government; and asking if he would be authorized to accept volunteers for twelve months to fill up the 55th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry to the maximum number. Bears a pencilled note stating that he would not be so authorized without orders from Washington.
