5b.27 Tremper Mound Pipes (video)

The effigies represent a wide range of birds and animals that presumably had special meaning to the Hopewell culture. Certain species may have been linked with legends, symbolized social groups, or had special magical powers that could be invoked by smoking the pipes. There were no residues of the materials that were smoked found with the pipes. It is possible that the Hopewell people used tobacco, since charred seeds of that plant have been found at a Hopewell site in Illinois. The Indians of the historic era also smoked willow bark, wild aster flowers, and other plants that may have been used by prehistoric groups. Image Number: FOGalleryEffigyPipesGroup
