LIFE MEMBERSHIPS

To Donors of Rare Gifts

In presenting life memberships to Mr. John H.

James, of Urbana, Ohio, who was present, and to Mr.

Albert G. Giddings, of Ashtabula, Ohio, who was un-

avoidably absent, Secretary Galbreath said:

DEAR MR. JAMES:

It is my very pleasant privilege, as Secretary, to present you

this life membership in the Ohio State Archaeological and Histori-

cal Society. For three generations in the James family rare histori-

cal papers have been collected and treasured safely to this day.

Ohio in the years to come will realize more fully than it does

today the eminent service

that you have thus ren-

dered.   Through    your

kindly interest the original

Journal of the Northwest

Territory has been trans-

ferred to the keeping of

the Society.   This rare

original volume of finely

preserved folio pages

numbering a little more

than 550, restores a por-

tion of the record of the

Territory from 1795 to

1803--a portion which has

been lost a little more than

one hundred years. The

honor which the Society

now confers upon you is

but a slight return for

this priceless gift.

You still have in your

possession manuscript dia-

ries, journals, newspaper

files, and rare books that constitute one of the most unique col-

lections of Ohioana in the State. I present this life membership to

you in the hope that in the future a goodly portion of these treas-

ures may also be transferred to the keeping of this Society.

Personally I cannot thank you, my good friend, too sincerely

for making the gift to me for this Society and thus crowning my

labors for the most fruitful year of my entire service.

Life Membership                   557

It is my privilege also to present for our Board of Trustees

a life membership to Mr. Albert G. Giddings, a grandson of

Joshua R. Giddings, famous anti-slavery advocate in the years

preceding the War and for many years a representative in Con-

gress and later in the diplomatic service as Consul of the United

States to Montreal, Canada. To Professor Harlow Lindley I

hand this life membership in recognition of the fact that it was

largely through his influence that the Giddings collection comes

to this Society and with the understanding that to him goes the

honor of bestowing the life membership personally upon Mr.

Giddings.
