Segment Synopsis: Laich grew up in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, his father worked in the steel mill and his mother was a clerk at a grocery store. He always knew he would go into the military, but in a different way than his relatives. He went to school on a football scholarship and joined the ROTC to become a commissioned officer. This raised a lot of questions from his relatives, who had all been enlisted, but after a meeting at the Croatia Club his family gave its support.

Segment Synopsis: In the mid 1990s Winston Allen an Army Criminal Investigations Special Agent who had served in the Philippines gave this short-sword and teacup to Laich as a gift celebrating his promotion to general. Allen explained that in World War II a Japanese officer had tried to keep them out of American hands by giving them to a Filipino man. That man decided that an American military man should have these items and so presented them to Mr. Allen. Laich said that to him the sword and teacup represent the continuing of military tradition and are emblematic of respect.
