Title
7.5 Mississippian Art And Ceremony
Description
Like many groups the world over, the Mississippian cultures used their artistic skills to make objects for social and ceremonial purposes. They developed images relating to fertility, military cults, and ancestor worship. Often these images were engraved on copper plates, conch shell cups, or shell gorgets. The bird-man images on the shell gorgets show warriors with the aggressive traits of falcons. The figures are often shown holding large flint blades such as those in this display
