Mississippian potters made many types of vessels, from narrow-necked water bottles to animal effigy pots, still without use of the wheel. Some decorations were painted or engraved on the vessels; others were made by adding more bits of clay. Pots such as these were probably used for special purposes rather than as kitchen ware
