Letter reporting on operations along the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, and stating that he did not have much faith in a majority of the three months' men sent there, that they were in camp just long enough to learn all sorts of mischief, that he had issued strict orders against day or midnight foraging of fowls, etc., belonging to the neighborhood, that a soldier had fallen asleep on trestle work and been killed when run over by a train, that unknown parties bent on destruction of trestle work were growing more numerous, that some of them would be made to "kiss the earth for daringness ere long," that there were many advantages to moving the location of battalion headquarters, that it was impossible to extend sentry lines with his present force, and that tents for the different squads would be welcome since most of the men were without shelter except for bough houses which would not shed rain.
