Anderson states that 2nd Lieutenant Frank S .Schieffer, Company F, 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry was a "good for nothing, worthless fellow, utterly incompetent;" asks if it was possible to appoint William E. Sheridan, Orderly Sergeant, Company F, 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry to one of the lieutenancies; and states that Sheridan was an active, energetic and daring man, and that failure to appoint Sheridan would result in the degeneration of the company and, in the event of the death of the Captain, the disorganization of the company.

Letter stating that the order for the election was given by General Peter Kinney of Portsmouth, that after the election he drilled his company two or three times per week in Harrisonville while they awaited further orders, that when Captain McDowell made a call in Harrisonville, all the "substantial" members of his company enlisted and were currently in Groesbeck's regiment, and that he had been left with the "refuse" and no more than 9 or 10 responsible men.

Rosecrans had issued an order for all three months' men on furlough to report themselves at Camp Chase to be mustered out of service and receive their pay, and that there were a large number of such men at Piqua who belonged to the 11th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (three months' service) and that one of his sons was among them; and requesting information as to when the men would be mustered out and paid.

Letter stating that a company at Camp Chase had dwindled down to 23 men and disbanded, with some forming other companies and the balance leaving for home, and that they were still awaiting the mustering officer.

Letter stating that he was sending per express rolls of companies on duty along the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad as well as consolidated morning reports for the month of July, that he found it impossible to consolidate the company reports prior to July 1st, that L. Gwynne, the former Post Adjutant, had not corrected or consolidated the reports up to the time he resigned and an examination revealed that many of them had been misplaced or lost and that the remainder were incorrect, that the reports could not now be corrected since the companies had been ordered home, and that Major Bennett had inaugurated a system through which he hoped to be able to send consolidated reports weekly at least.

Letter stating that he would like to obtain the position of Quartermaster of the 32nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and that they were raising a company at Mt. Vernon which was to go into Colonel Thomas H .Ford's regiment. Bears endorsement of Rollin C. Hurd who states that politically speaking, Norton's appointment would be "judicious."

J.H. Robinson, Washington, Fayette County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that Special Order Number 538 had authorized him to enlist a company of cavalry and stipulated that the men were to find their own horses and were to receive forty cents per day for use and risk, and that they had learned from captains in Highland and Brown Counties that Buckingham was receiving cavalry companies and furnishing them horses; asking why the government would furnish horses to some cavalry companies and require other cavalry companies to find their own horses; requesting an extension of five days in order to report a company of one hundred men; and stating that this would give him some men to spare when they got into camp in case some of the men "stampeded" or panicked, and that the men who were enlisting currently were the very best and wanted a day or so longer to "fix matters" at home. Letter stating that they did not know how soon they would have their company full, that they were recruiting as fast as possible, that they would report themselves when their company was full, that they had not received their commissions as expected, that they had strictly followed Buckingham's instructions, that they could not expect to get their company full if they did not get their commissions, and that some of their men would withdraw from the company if it was not legally organized before long.

William H. Trimble, Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter regarding Colonel Jno. H. Allen, stating that he thought Allen had been offered a higher position in Illinois, that Allen thought he was worthy of the position of Brigadier General and he agreed, that he knew of no West Point man who was Allen's equal in intellectual ability and all the attributes of manhood except for Buckingham, and that Allen had seen three years active service and was perfectly fresh in the drill. Trimble goes on to state that he was in a military and political fight at Hillsboro, and that he sometimes felt like deserting and going into the active army of operation.

Letter stating that he had organized a company of infantry over a year ago, that their commissions were received in February and that they had been drilling regularly, and that they had organized under the law of 1856; asking if they were considered one of the reserve companies; and stating that some of the boys were itching for a fight, that they were uniformed and had gone about as far with the drill as possible without arms, and that they would be glad to have any arms not in use.

Letter stating that the dispatches ordering him to take Company A to Columbus via Circleville were not received until Friday, August 2, that the dispatches did not reach him in consequence of Tuesday morning's storm which burned out the telegraph wires at Circleville, that after waiting until Tuesday noon for orders, he went via Zanesville as it was the only way by which he could report on Tuesday as previously ordered, that under the circumstances, he hoped that Buckingham would release him from the charge of disobeying orders, and that he hoped they would be given an opportunity to "wash out the disgrace" which their rejection on Tuesday had put upon them.

Letter seeking an appointment not lower than First Sergeant in a cavalry unit, and that he had served as a Corporal in the U.S. Dragoons and felt that he was competent to instruct a company or squadron of horsemen in carbine and sabre exercise, etc.; citing George H. Thomas and Fitz-John Porter among his references; and stating that C.D. Woodruff of Toledo was trying to enroll a company of cavalry, but was not the man for it, and that he would mention more officers as references, but some of them such as Robert E. Lee were in the Confederate Army.

Letter regarding a full company which had arrived at Camp Putnam for the 36th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry; stating that the company had elected its officers, but that he understood the nomination to have been "irregular," that the elected officers were the best men in the company for the places, of excellent health and physique, intelligent, and of exceptional habits with one exception, and that Captain John Earhart occasionally drank too much, but had not touched liquor since coming into camp.

Letter stating that the artillery companies from Portsmouth and Jackson County had applied for a place in the 33rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, that the artillery company from Portsmouth was composed of 50 men, 25 or 30 of whom had considerable drill in the use of a gun, that the artillery company from Jackson County was "nearly entirely raw" and without drill, that there were three cavalry companies partly organized in Scioto and adjoining counties and that he could not say much for the efficiency of these companies without considerable time for drill, and that he hoped to fill up the regiment rapidly; requesting that no more companies be ordered away; stating that two companies raised in Scioto County had been ordered away since the order for the organization of the 33rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Portsmouth was issued, and that they had no camp equipage and that companies might arrive before any was received; and asking how they could subsist those men until the equipage was received.

Wachenschwang, a Private in Company G of the 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (three months' service) as his hospital steward, that Wachenschwang's term of enlistment had expired and that his services would be lost unless Buckingham appointed him as Post Hospital Steward, that Wachenschwang was an accomplished druggist and pharmacist, and that Wachenschwang's services were invaluable since he had no Surgeon's Mate and an average number of over 80 patients.
