Letter regarding a cavalry company; asking if the government furnished all equipments for men and officers, what the pay was per month for privates, which division and regiment the company would be placed, if any of the officers were allowed more than one horse, and if extra horses were furnished by the government or by the officers; and stating that a good deal of discouragement had been encountered owing to the length of time between the company's organization on April 23rd and when notice was received of the company's acceptance, that many of the men had made other arrangements joining infantry companies, etc., and that he hoped an extension of one week or more could be granted in accepting the company.

Letter requesting to be paid "forthwith" at least a portion of the amount due him for three months' service ending on July 27th; and stating that since April 15th he had neglected all personal matters and given his time and over $300 in cash towards the suppression of the rebellion, that he returned home to find himself threatened with the penalty of a delinquent June tax of some $53 and the executions for costs against a concern for which he was acting as agent when he went into the war, that it seemed a hard case to be thus compelled to pay a penalty and costs to the officials of Ohio while at the same time the State owed him many times the amount, that $100 would relieve him of these "petty embarrassments," and that if those in office were not able to afford such relief, then Ohio "may go to the devil" and he would serve the remainder of the war under another state. Letter stating that on or about June 27th, when some ten miles beyond Clarksburg, Virginia, the officers of the 19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (three months' service) were ordered to send back all the baggage not absolutely necessary for the march towards Beverly, that this order came from General William S. Rosecrans, that, in accordance with the order, he sent a small trunk and a bag of valuable clothing, etc., gathered up in his company as a matter of precaution, to the railroad at Clarksburg for shipment to Cleveland, that he had also enclosed in the trunk his muster roll and the receipt signed by members of his company for the clothing, etc. delivered to them, and that the trunk and bag never reached Cleveland; and requesting a certificate from headquarters which would enable him to pass over the various routes by way of Zanesville, Wheeling, Grafton, Marietta and Parkersburg so that he could return to Clarksburg and follow the missing property from that point.
