Benjamin Turner, Huron, Erie County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that he had an order from Colonel E[rastus].B. Tyler to recruit 30 good men to fill up Company E of the 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, that he would have the requisite number of men ready by October 12, and that he wanted the necessary muster in rolls so that proper returns could be made; asking if Buckingham's recent order applied to recruits for companies already in service; stating that if he had the authority to muster in men, he could "fasten" every recruit as raised, that Company E of the 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry was minus a Captain and 1st Lieutenant, and the 2nd Lieutenant was sick and unfit for duty, that if he were constituted a 2nd Lieutenant in Company E, he could then administer the oath and take care of the men, that as it stood, he might lose some of his men since there were too many recruiting officers about, and that he had traveled many miles to get the necessary number of men, but had not yet gone out of the county; and asking if his recruits would be equipped before leaving.

Haskell of Ashtabula as a person well qualified for the office of Lieutenant, that Haskell had served as 2nd Lieutenant in Colonel [Samuel] Beatty's regiment [19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (three months' service)], that Haskell was brave, honest, and patriotic, and that if appointed, Haskell would immediately commence the business of recruiting for the regiment.

Letter requesting information regarding the new recruiting arrangement in Ohio; and applying for a Lieutenant's commission under the new arrangement for the purpose of recruiting volunteers. Bears a note signed by six individuals; certifying that Bowman was a man of sober and industrious habits, energetic in business, of good moral character, possessed some military experience, and was in every way entitled to Buckingham's favorable consideration as a recruiting officer for Preble County and Darke County; and stating that Bowman would be an efficient officer in the field of active service, and was willing to enter the infantry, cavalry, or artillery, and that they thought Bowman could succeed in raising a company in a reasonable length of time if he received a commission with the power of swearing in the volunteers as they enlisted.

Letter stating that he had been handed a notification of his nomination by Governor William Dennison as a member of the Military Committee for his Congressional District and accepted the duty assigned him, that there were no members of the committee from Vinton County, which was in the district, that a meeting of the committee had been scheduled at the Tallmadge House in Lancaster, that it was unfortunate that they now had eight Lieutenants, with orders, recruiting in Fairfield County, that three of these Lieutenants were recruiting for the 46th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry while the other five Lieutenants were recruiting for the 61st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, that he feared there would be trouble between these different interests, that since commanders were not yet appointed for the companies being raised, he wanted to know which regiment was to be filled up first, that the three Lieutenants recruiting for the 46th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry were recruiting for the same company, and that he would be pleased if Buckingham directed the committee to first assist the Lieutenants of the 46th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry in order to fill the one company.

Daniel T. Evans, Thurman, Gallia County, Ohio. To Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham. Letter stating that part of his company of Militia of the Reserve (Company H, 2nd Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 7th Division) was anxious to go into active service under his brother, John H. Evans, a graduate of Amherst College, Class of 1861, that his brother had applied to Buckingham for permission to raise a company for the war, went to work recruiting, and had thirty men enlisted by the time he received Buckingham's answer saying that no more commissions would be issued to raise companies, that his brother's men had operated upon their friends until the number swelled to upwards of forty, that Buckingham's letter was a damper to his brother, that his brother's men were all anxious to have him lead them, and that if his brother was authorized, there was no doubt he could raise a full company; asking if the ability to raise that many men in an area like Gallia County, which had recruiting officers over it for weeks, was a strong recommendation; and requesting that Buckingham send his brother the proper authority to go on and fill up the company.
