J.D. Ensign, Secretary, Ashland County Military Committee, Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio. To Governor David Tod. Letter requesting an extension of the time of Captain William S. Crowell for 30 days from the time of expiration; and stating that Crowell and Lieutenants Tourgee and Spaulding were doing well and if their success continued, they would raise a hundred men in the time, that their other recruiting officers were succeeding as well as could be expected, that they would be in a better situation if towns like Cleveland did not offer bounties, that in a rural district, this could not be done, but their men responded as well as they had reason to expect, that it would help if Tod could offer a bounty of $25 or $50 for every recruit, that they were working earnestly and hoped to furnish their quota in the time allowed, and that General [John] Pope's orders were helping and the people liked their vigorous tone.
