Letter stating that instead of military committees, the volunteers by vote should signify the officers and those and none other should be appointed, that this would dispose of the herd of "silk stockins" and "kid glove gentry" and bring out the middle and laboring classes where the bone and sinew of the country now was and always had been, that men and not boys should be called into the field and ought to be led by those of their choice when in service, that when men entered the service, they should be allowed, as in private life, to designate their leaders, that he feared it would be necessary to resort to a draft in the end and thought the sooner it came the better, and that in one sense he liked a draft as it would place all on a level and bring in a class of men who talked much, but never acted themselves.
